What part of the face is improved by Chin Liposuction?
The chin liposculpture procedure removes excess fat from under the jaw line down to the base of the neck. If you have jowls, which are fat bulges below the corners of the mouth, the procedure will reduce those as well. By removing the fat along and below the jaw line, the jaw bone looks sharper and the neck looks younger and less flabby. Having a clean profile will make you look more refined and slimmer. Your profile will be improved and you won't cringe when someone wants to take your picture!
What happens to my skin after the fat is removed?
Almost every patient - even patients in their 80's - will have an acceptable amount of skin retraction and will see a positive change in their appearance. While many patients are worried about having a hanging skin after the procedure, thankfully the procedure does an excellent job of rejuvenating the neck. While neck liposculpture cannot stretch the skin tight like a face lift, it can remove the fat that is weighing down the skin and help the skin tighten. The results are natural, not pulled.
What if I have very loose neck skin?
If you are over age 40 or have very loose skin, you should consider adding the SmartLipo laser skin tightening to aid in additional skin tightening. The SmartLipo laser works very well in the chin area. The laser heats up the underside of the skin and helps it tighten an additional 15 to 20% more than liposculpture alone.
What if I don't have any fat but I have a lot of loose skin?
If you don't have any fat and you just have loose skin, liposculpture is not the right procedure for you. In order to be a good candidate, you should be able to pinch at least a half-inch between your fingers directly under your chin.
What kind of expectations should I have for chin liposculpture?
It is very easy to remove 80% of the fat in your double chin area, but your profile is also determined by your neck muscles, the shape of your jaw bone, and your skin. This procedure is very quick and easy, but it is not going to make you look like a different person. You will still look like you, but with a better profile, more prominent jawbone, and slimmer neck line.

What is a Chin Liposuction procedure like?
Chin liposculpture takes less than 1 hour and it is done in our office. You will rest on your back, face up for the entire procedure. The procedure has three parts.
- 1. We mark the fat to be removed by drawing on your skin with a marker. Every human face is shaped differently, so each person's marks will be slightly different. We will record bumps and unevenness and try to smooth out your contour as much as possible. If you have jowls, we will mark those as well. We photograph your marks for our records and so that we can record the change in your "after" photos.
- Using lidocaine (numbing solution), we make three tiny holes. One hole is under each earlobe and the third is directly under your chin. These holes are very tiny and usually are difficult to identify in a week or two. They resemble an small ingrown hair or little pimple. A small amount of lidocaine solution (about 2 ounces) is pushed into the fat through the tiny holes.
- Once the solution has been pushed into the fat, we remove the majority of the solution and the fat with a straw-like instrument and suction. These instruments are very tiny and we make sure that we remove the fat very evenly and smoothly. If you are having the SmartLipo laser skin tightening, the last step of the procedure is to use the laser on the underside of the skin to help it tighten.
After the procedure we clean off the markings and wrap your head in a black elastic garment, similar to an ace bandage with velcro, which you will wear for the first 48 hours and then at night time only for the next five days. The three tiny holes will leak fluid (the same fluid we used to numb your fat) for about 12 hours. We will put gauze over the holes underneath the black stretchy garment. We do not use any stitches and the holes will heal up quickly on their own.
How should I care for my face when I get home?
You can do almost anything you want to do after the procedure, however you should wait 24 hours to shower or shave and wait 7 days to go swimming. You can exercise as soon as you are ready and most people are back in the gym in about 3 days. Go ahead and use lotion or go tanning whenever you wish, but don't scratch or sunburn the healing holes.
When can I go back to work?
Most people with a regular office job go back to work after they remove the chin garment, 48 hours after the procedure. There is no medical reason you cannot return back to work the same day, however you will probably feel too self-conscious with the chin garment on your head to do so.
Can the procedure remove fat from my upper cheeks or from the back of my neck?
No. We do not remove fat from the upper cheeks (the apple part of your cheek) and we do not remove fat from the back of the neck.
Can I drive myself home?
Yes. This procedure is very safe and easy. Amost every patient can drive themselves home, however if you are very anxious, please arrange for a driver or take a taxi so that we can give you medication to relax you. Most people do not need any medication, but we want every patient to feel relaxed and comfortable. If we give you a relaxant, you cannot drive yourself home.
